What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. It often grows slowly and may not cause symptoms in its early stages. Early prostate cancer is treatable. That’s why prostate cancer screening is essential, especially for men over 50 or those at higher risk.

Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow in the prostate gland, a small organ located below the bladder that helps produce semen. These abnormal cells can sometimes form tumors which, in more serious cases, spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of prostate cancer

Many men with early-stage prostate cancer experience no symptoms at all. This is why screening is important.

Many of these symptoms can also be caused by other prostate or urinary conditions, such as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or urinary tract infections.

However, see your doctor if you notice any of the following:

  • Trouble starting to urinate

  • Weak or slow urine stream

  • Frequent urination, especially at night

  • Feeling like you still need to urinate after going

  • Leaking urine or stool

  • Pain or burning during urination

  • Pain during ejaculation

  • Blood in urine or semen

  • Pain in the lower back, hips, or chest

Who should get screened for prostate cancer?

You should consider prostate cancer screening if you are:

  • 50 years or older

  • 45 years old with a family history of prostate cancer

  • 45 years old and African America, as Black men have a higher risk

Why early detection is important

Prostate cancer often develops without noticeable symptoms, especially in the early stages. That’s why regular screening is so important.

Detecting prostate cancer early—before it spreads—makes it easier to treat and improves long-term outcomes. Early detection can also reduce the need for aggressive treatment and help preserve your quality of life.

What is prostate cancer screening?

Prostate cancer screening is a preventive tool used to detect cancer before symptoms appear. It typically involves:

  • PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) Blood Test – A simple blood test that measures PSA levels. Elevated PSA can indicate prostate cancer or other prostate conditions.

  • Urinalysis – Helps identify or rule out other urinary or prostate-related issues, such as infections or inflammation.

These non-invasive tests provide valuable insights into prostate health and can help guide decisions about further evaluation or treatment if needed.
