Mushrooms may protect against prostate cancer

New research suggests that regularly eating mushrooms may help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. With prostate cancer being one of the most common cancers in men, these findings offer a promising—and natural—approach to prevention.

Study Highlights: Mushroom Consumption and Prostate Health

A large-scale study published in the International Journal of Cancer on Sept. 4, 2019, tracked more than 36,000 men aged 40 to 79 over a period of 13 to 25 years. Participants provided detailed information about their lifestyle, medical history, and diet—including their weekly intake of 39 foods and beverages.

The results were significant:

  • Men who consumed mushrooms 1 to 2 times per week (about 3 ounces per serving) had an 8% lower risk of developing prostate cancer compared to men who didn’t eat mushrooms.

  • Those who ate mushrooms 3 or more times per week experienced a 17% lower risk.

What’s Behind the Benefit?

The researchers believe the protective effect of mushrooms may be linked to ergothioneine, a powerful antioxidant found in many mushroom varieties. Ergothioneine may help fight oxidative stress, which is believed to contribute to the development of certain cancers, including prostate cancer.

Mushroom types with the highest ergothioneine levels include:

  • Shiitake

  • Maitake

  • Oyster

  • King Oyster

Another important finding: the benefit remained consistent regardless of the participants' intake of meat, dairy, vegetables, or other dietary factors—suggesting an independent link between mushroom consumption and prostate health.

Important Caveats

While these findings are promising, it’s important to note that this was an observational study. That means it can’t prove a cause-and-effect relationship—only an association. Still, adding mushrooms to your diet is a simple and nutritious choice that may support prostate health over time.
